Dr. Francine Garrett-Bakelman of the University of Virginia studies acute myeloid leukemia (AML), an aggressive form of blood cancer that can return after treatment, particularly in high-risk patients.

Through her work in the lab and in the clinic seeing cancer patients, the 2021 Pew-Stewart scholar hopes to better understand the biology behind AML relapse—work that could unlock new treatments for the disease.

Supported by The Alexander and Margaret Stewart Trust, the Pew-Stewart Scholars Program for Cancer Research is a national initiative designed to support promising early-career scientists whose work accelerates discovery and advances progress toward a cure for cancer.
